The picture was undoubtedly among Goering’s loot and it had certainly been sold to him by van Meegeren so the case wasn’t looking too good for the dealer. 1 His claim was greeted by considerable scepticism as several leading experts had already said the painting was genuine. Whereupon, van Meegeren caused an even greater sensation when he announced that if the court provided him with the paint and a canvas, he would produce another Vermeer with the same apparent authenticity. 2 While van Meegeren’s “Christ at Emmaus” was thought to be a genuine Vermeer, the picture was worth millions of guilders, and experts and art lovers would come from all over the world and pay money to see it. Today, it’s worth nothing, and nobody would cross the street to see it free. But the picture has not changed. What has? 3 It’s no use saying that there is a vast gulf between any masterpiece and any imitation of it. I have no doubt there is. But if we cannot see the difference – and successful art forgery would not exist if we could – what exactly does the difference consist of? 4 In our minds, a picture is good because it has been painted by a famous painter like Rembrandt.
