Do not wait to review until the night before the exam. • Follow a regular sleeping pattern. Regular sleep is the best way to control stress. • Do not increase your coffee or cola intake. Avoid overloading with sugar-laden soft drinks that can cause nervousness and interfere with the ability to focus. • At all times, avoid studying the night before the exam — by now you either know the material or you don’t. • Have a leisurely light breakfast. Be at school in good time. • Have realistic expectations, do NOT try for perfection. Still, aim to do YOUR very best. During the test: • Make sure you read the directions thoroughly and budget your test taking time carefully. • Don’t spend too much time on any one question. If you can’t come up with the answer, quickly move on to questions you CAN answer. • Do not panic about running out of time. Check the time periodically, but avoid checking too frequently as this will only distract you and make you more anxious. • When you get anxious, visualize a calming scene — such as a beach, or trees in blossom. • Likewise, when you notice any symptoms of anxiety during the exam, use relaxed breathing to calm yourself: Slowly breathe in to the count of seven, then slowly exhale to the count of seven. Concentrate on your breathing; repeat until you feel calm. • Change positions to help you relax. Stretch your arms and legs, and then relax them again. • Never ever leave a question unanswered. Answer EVERY question, even if that means guessing. • At the end of the exam, control your answers and edit your texts, checking spelling, punctuation, grammar and style. After the test: • Do something to reward yourself – treat yourself right. • Don’t worry anymore about the exam you have just taken. Concentrate instead on the next one.
