Make Your Way 8, Schulbuch mit Audio-CD und CD-ROM
Tips for your Listening exam • Carefully read the instructions to find out about the topic of the recording. Brainstorm: What do you already know about the topic, what might you expect to hear? • Make good use of the 45 seconds preparation time: Attentively study the answers to choose/ the questions to answer/the statements to complete/the sentence parts to match/etc. Find out what specific information is required (names, places, dates, numbers, etc.). Highlight key words . • As every recording will be played twice, use the first playing to choose an answer/to answer a question/to complete a statement/etc. in a preliminary way . Use the second playing to confirm (or overrule ) your choices and to edit your answers and sentence completions. • If you really can’t think of an answer during the first playing, come back to it during the second one. • For multiple choice questions, if you hear something that tells you that one of the answers is definitely wrong, put a dot next to that answer – identifying wrong answers is a first step toward identifying the correct ones. • In some tasks you have to pay attention to the limit of four words allowed for your answers. This is a strictly-set number, so do not exceed it. Likewise, bear in mind that certain tasks require that you sort out certain options (also called distractors , options NOT to use). • Listen for signpost words such as moreover , however , although , conversely , particularly , finally , etc. They will tell you the direction the argument takes. • After the second listening you still have another 45 seconds for a final check of your answers. Tips for your Reading exam • Read the instructions very carefully as they will tell you what exactly you are required to do. For some task types, they will also remind you of the word limit to stay within, or tell you the exact number of distractors NOT to use. • Before reading the text, it is important to thoroughly study the questions. As you read them, highlight important information such as dates , places and names . • Once you are through with reading all the questions, glance over the text. If you spot any information relating to the questions, mark it straight away. • For tasks requiring an answer/a sentence completion no longer than four words, keep in mind that words or word phrases as you find them in the text will not always function properly as answers or sentence completions: In order to adapt them to the syntactic structure of an answer/of a gapped sentence you will have to rephrase them first. Tips for your Language in use exam • For gap filling tasks , pay close attention to the words before and after the gaps, as they both determine what words can or can’t be used. It’s a very common mistake to find a word that fits the text before the gap, but not the text after. Therefore, always look at both sides … of the gap. • For word formation tasks , first decide what type of word (verb, noun, adjective or adverb) is required. Only then make the necessary change in the stem word. Keep in mind, however, that sometimes you will not have to change word class, but meaning only . Write the word you have formed in the space provided at the end of the text, paying attention to its correct spelling. • In editing (or “Spot-the-error-” ) tasks , look out for words like prepositions and conjunctions because these words are nearly always among “the usual suspects”. And be sure to read the instructions entirely as they will give you a clue on how many correct lines to expect. 125 Make Your Way to the Written Matura M Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
