Writing station: Developing a theme using parallelism and repetition One way of structuring your writing to make sure your sequence of ideas is clear is to use parallelism and repetition. For example, look at the text “Mirror, mirror on the wall” again. Paragraph 1 is structured through a number of repetitive parallel statements: However, the secret of using this technique effectively is to think carefully about your vocabulary. Imagine how boring the passage would read if the author had used “insist” in all cases. This technique of repetitive parallel statements can also be used to link paragraphs. For example in the text: Clichés People have always used clichés when describing beauty. Work in pairs and think of “typical” ways of describing the following: Clichés in poetry Such clichés are not new. They have always been found in poetry. The following (p. 81, left) sonnet , for example, by Edmund Spenser (c.1552–1599), is full of them. It is a typical poem of the sixteenth century, trying to describe the beauty of a woman the poet admires. Nowadays, because of its archaic language, this poem is difficult even for English people to understand.
