When Manuel Pedro’s daughter looked at him one morning and said “Wow, you’re fat!”, he knew it was time to lose some weight. e trouble was, he didn’t have time to do any exercise. “I work in an oce all day, and when I get home in the evening, I generally just want to sit down and relax. At the weekend I normally do things with my kids, so I just don’t have time to go to the gym or go for a run.” However, one day, his wife suggested buying a treadmill and walking on it while he worked. “I thought she was crazy at rst,” he says. “But then I thought, why not?” So the forty-year-old bought a cheap treadmill and put it in the corner of his oce. He xed his laptop to it and began walking and working at the same time. “At rst, I found it hard to type and walk at the same time. I got really stressed and sometimes only did it once or twice a week. I also looked really stupid in a shirt and tie on a treadmill. My colleagues thought it was really funny.” However, soon Manuel got better at working while he walked, and started to feel healthier. Aer a while he was doing several hours’ walking every morning. “I have a lot more energy now,” says the oce manager. “When I get to the oce, I get straight on the treadmill and check my emails. I’m doing three hours a day at the moment. Every week I do ten minutes’ more walking. I’ve lost a lot of weight.
