Are they different from the text you are going to write? What changes will you have to make? 2 Read through the text and underline or highlight the information you want to present to your readers. 3 Make notes of the relevant information in the target language (English). 4 Use your notes to write the required text (making sure your language fits the text type). 5 Proofread and edit your text (get rid of mistakes, check if you’ve structured your text into paragraphs and have used appropriate linking expressions, eliminate any irrelevant information). 41 Read these three letters, which were written to The Guardian newspaper in response to an article there, and answer the questions. 1 What was the title of the original article? 2 When did it appear in the newspaper? 42 3 What is the name of the journalist who wrote the article? 4 The opinion expressed in the article was that … a we should travel more. b we should travel less. Simon Jenkins rightly criticises our arrogant assumption of the right to move around ( Don’t blame the system for winter chaos. Stay at home , 23 December). But ¡rst-hand knowledge of other countries is vitally important, especially for young people forming their ideas of the world. e post-war generation explored other countries cheaply and with no additional carbon footprint by hitch-hiking. Now we use transport that is expensive, both in terms of money and carbon emissions. We could start to be more open about making our cars available to hitch-hikers. Hitch-hiking can be risky, but the dangers of our young people spending their lives on the sofa are probably worse. (Alison Prince, Whiting Bay, Isle of Arran) Another aspect which Simon Jenkins (23 De- cember) does not mention is the need to support local shops. When our washing machine broke down last week, we went down to our local electrical shop at 2 pm. By 3 pm a new machine was delivered and installed. Contrast that with the service you get from big chain stores. (Andy Semple, Cockermouth, Cumbria) Simon Jenkins gets lots of things right when he talks about our unsocial travel habits, but he misses out the most important observation. Flexible working forces people to commute long distances. In the past, we used to move to be near our jobs. But now no one has a job for life, so everyone commutes. What a mad world. We ex- ploit the earth and the workers at the same time.
