188 Writing guide Sample report task Future Earth is an international youth organisation that has invited young people to write reports on issues affecting the global climate. You have found the graph on the right and decide to send in a report about energy consumption in the USA. In your report, you should:   describe the changes in the consumption of different energy sources.   compare data where relevant.   speculate about future developments. Divide your report into sections and give them headings. Write around 300 words. Oil The historical trends shows oil as the major source of energy as consumption rose from around 35 quadrillion (35q) units in 1980 to around 42q in 2014. Despite some fluctuations between the years 1980 and 1995, there was a steady increase, which is expected to continue, reaching 48q in the year 2030. Natural gas and coal The consumption of energy from natural gas and coal followed a similar pattern over this period. From 20q and 16q respectively in 1980, gas showed an initial fall and coal a gradual increase, with consumption of the two fuels being equal between 1985 and 1990. Consumption has fluctuated since 1990, but both sources now provide 24q units. The consumption of coal is expected to rise to 32q until 2030, whereas after 2015, natural gas is predicted to remain stable at 25q. Nuclear energy, solar /wind and hydropower In 1980, energy from solar /wind, nuclear and hydropower was the least-used at only 4q units. In the last 35 years, the use of nuclear energy has gone up by 3q units, and solar /wind by 2q. Since 2005, hydropower has fallen back to where it stood in 1980. It is expected to remain more or less constant through to 2030, whilst the other energy sources are expected to rise gradually after 2025. Nothing changes To summarise, it can be said that fossil fuels will remain the main energy source for the United States, supplemented by a small amount of hydroelectric and nuclear power as well as a tiny amount of renewables like wind and solar power. Unfortunately, the effects of energy production on our climate will continue to be destructive. Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eig ntum des Verlags öbv
