You are part of a project team working on the implications of big data for hardware and software. The aim is to produce a general overview of the technology concerned. Individual long turn (4–5 minutes): You are at the first team meeting and have been asked to introduce the topic by informing your classmates about the data volume created at the time of the London Olympics in 2012. This was one of the first showcase events that explicitly dealt with big data infrastructure and volume. In your presentation, you should: give an overview of the key data sources, using the illustration on the next page. speculate about the problems huge data volumes can cause in general. analyse the reasons for such data hype. Interaction (8–10 minutes): After your presentation, one of the IT teachers approaches you and asks for a few clarifications. In your conversation, you should: inform the teacher about the technical challenges worldwide sports events create for today’s media and data industry. suggest some requirements IT hardware will have to meet in the future. express how you personally feel about intensive media coverage of big or even smaller events. 34 But maybe all of this misses the point of sport, which ought to be rooted (Q8) and unpredictability and those glorious parts of being human that are not capable of being chopped into digital facts and spewed out by IBM.
