They interviewed me, and I was (2) to be accepted. The plane took us to Lomé, the capital city. I remember feeling (3) when I got my first sight of the city. However, once in the city I was (4) by the rubbish in the street and general lack of hygiene, with children washing themselves alongside animals. We took a van to the village, about 50 kilometres away. I was (5) to see if it would be like the places I’d seen in documentaries and photos. The journey itself was scary. The van had at least twice the number of passengers it was designed for, and the headlights weren’t working, so someone shone a torch on the road. I was (6) by the lack of attention to safety. The village itself was a real culture shock. Many people had never met a European, so they stared and said things I didn’t understand. Children wanted to touch my hair and babies cried in fear. I felt very (7) at first. But the people on the project made a big effort to make me feel at home, so I never felt (8) . We all ate and lived together. The food was simple and repetitive, and there were things I didn’t like, but my hosts would have been (9) if I’d turned down the little they had to offer, so I never let this show. Towards the end of my stay I was introduced to the head of the village. I knew I needed to be extremely respectful, and I was.
