Read the blog post about the classroom of the future. What criteria should a modern classroom meet? SPEaKIng 7 REaDIng 8 SimonSays @ 9.23 pm The 5 key components of modern classroom design Creative and modern classroom design involves far more than simply equipping a 20th-century classroom with computers. I’m afraid, an entirely new concept needs to be developed, from the basic shell of the classroom to the teacher’s area to the workstations for students. Smart classrooms have to come up to speed in more than one area in order to provide an intelligent learning space to serve the learners of today and the immediate future. I’ve been thinking about this. I believe there are five design elements that distinguish the 21st-century classroom. 1 Collaborative classroom furniture. Collaboration means interaction between students and between students and teachers. Flexibility is the key, and in order to provide this, classrooms need furniture that can be adapted easily for group use when working on projects, then quickly changed to individual learning spaces for activities like testing and independent reading. 2 Sufficient electrical resources. It’s a common sight: Students in a school library or other learning area crowding around a single available AC outlet to charge devices like tablets or laptops. Schools must realise that in this day and age, electricity is vital for both teaching and learning resources and that making it easily available is an asset to the educational experience too. 3 Intelligent lecterns. But what about teachers? I think they only need a technological base in the classroom. The lectern can fulfil that need if it incorporates features such as a recessed flat-screen monitor, USB ports, interactive whiteboard controls and audio / visual capabilities.
