Usually you are allowed to take notes to help you remember the important points. Audio material you will come across at school typically includes presentations, interviews, conversations and panel discussions. You often only hear the speakers’ voices, so you have to rely on their intonation to interpret what they are saying. TIP: Before listening Look for clues about the subject of the recording (names, times, numbers, photos and places). Think about what you already know about the subject. Make sure you have read all of the questions so that you are familiar with them while listening. Highlight important words and expressions in the questions. Listening to the recording for the first time Listen carefully and keep calm. Watch out for keywords and context factors, and try to get the gist. Note down important information. Listening to the recording for the second time Listen for detail: concentrate on the information you need to complete the task. If you don’t know the correct answer, guess. When doing exercise 46, ‘Teenagers and the media’, on p. 108, go through the tips one by one. After having done the exercise, discuss if the tips were useful or not.
