The good old times http://www.the-good-old-times.com No one owned a TV set in those days. Having a radio was quite something. When there was something interesting on, say a radio play or a football game, we used to invite all our neighbours and we’d sit together for hours afterwards, discussing the programme and having a good time together. Sam from New Zealand Of course shops weren’t open 24/7 when I was young. They used to be closed on Sundays and special days like Christmas and Easter, for example. People would try to do their grocery shopping during the week and then enjoy a long leisurely weekend. It wasn’t very (1) convenient when you’d forgotten to buy something, but it was much better for the sales people, who had a weekend too. Bob from England When I was a little girl, we used to have three sets of clothes: one for going to school, one for when we were at home and our ‘Sunday best’, which we would put on for going to church on Sundays or on special (2) occasions like birthdays. I used to hate my everyday clothes. Deirdre from Wales Teachers used to be much stricter (3) back in the day. They insisted on discipline, manners and politeness. They’d give us (4) detention and even (5) spank us for (6) talking out of turn. Elizabeth from Australia Most families only had meat once a week, on Sundays usually. We couldn’t (7) afford it more often. And even when there was meat for lunch, we used to make do with a tiny cut or half a chicken instead of a whole one – hard to believe nowadays. Dorothy from Ireland The internet was unheard-of when I was young, even computers. So if you needed some information, you would consult an encyclopedia. And we used to go to the public library regularly to look things up or find out stuff. Joanie from Scotland We didn’t have a car, and flights were a luxury no one could afford. In our holidays my wife and I used to bike (8) the length and breadth of the country – the Lake District, the Cotswolds, Cornwall. We’d (9) set off early in the morning and cycle for six to eight hours a day. And what fun we had! Barry from England Ask your (great-)grandparents about the time when they were young.
