Dorothy was not only accepted to Harvard, she was also o ered free tuition, room and board as well as help nding a job on campus. e tiny town rallied around Dorothy and raised the money to get her to Boston so that she could see the university. One of the teachers travelled with her because Dorothy had never taken a plane or a subway and never really been outside South Carolina. “Arriving at Harvard,” her teacher said, “it was just like she was at home.
