The van had at least twice the number of passengers it was designed for, and the headlights weren’t working, so someone shone a torch on the road. I was (6) by the lack of attention to safety. The village itself was a real culture shock. Many people had never met a European, so they stared and said things I didn’t understand. Children wanted to touch my hair and babies cried in fear. I felt very (7) at first. But the people on the project made a big effort to make me feel at home, so I never felt (8) . We all ate and lived together. The food was simple and repetitive, and there were things I didn’t like, but my hosts would have been (9) if I’d turned down the little they had to offer, so I never let this show. Towards the end of my stay I was introduced to the head of the village. I knew I needed to be extremely respectful, and I was.
