Montgomery More than 60 years ago, at the end of World War II in 1945, twenty-two American charities – a combination of civic, religious, cooperative and labor organizations – got together to found CARE. Originally known as the Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe (now: ‘Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere’) they began to deliver millions of CARE packages across Europe. The food and relief supplies made a huge difference to their hungry recipients. A difference that is still being felt today as CARE continues to assist millions of people around the world. Over the next three decades, CARE shifted its focus away from Europe and focused more on giving assistance in the developing world. Programs in the areas of education, natural resources management, nutrition, water and sanitation, and healthcare in Southern Africa, South Asia and South America were started. Broadening the geographic focus and expanding beyond the original food distribution programs, CARE started to assist people affected by major emergencies – from famine in Ethiopia to hurricane recovery in Honduras. As the organization grew, CARE’s scope widened to include the view that poverty is often caused by the absence of rights, opportunities and assets, largely due to social exclusion, marginalization, and discrimination. In the early 1990’s their work grew into a ‘rights-based approach’ to development. The CARE vision is to work towards a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been eradicated and people live in dignity and security. CARE is dedicated to ending poverty and strives to serve individuals and families in the poorest communities in the world. Drawing strength from its global diversity, resources and experience, it promotes innovative solutions and advocates global responsibility. CARE promotes lasting change by strengthening the capacity for self-help, providing economic opportunity, delivering relief in emergencies, influencing policy decisions at all levels and addressing discrimination in all its forms. Today, CARE is one of the oldest and largest aid organizations. It receives donations from governmental as well as non-governmental agencies and individuals. In 2013, CARE worked in 87 countries around the world, supporting 927 development and humanitarian aid projects to reach more than 97 million people. And the CARE package survived as well: the term is still a synonym for food gifts in several languages around the world. Unit 4, exercise 15a Student B Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
