The Umbrella Revolution  Occupy  Fighting for education b (1) The youngest ever winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Malala Yousafzay, was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman on her way home from school but survived. Since then she has been tireless in her fight for girls’ right to an education, defying the extremist group. In 2013, Malala delivered a now famous address at the UN headquarters in New York, in which she described the Taliban’s opposition to education as their fear of “books and pens”. Although new threats against her life emerged as soon as it became known that she had won the prestigious prize, the education activist refuses to be silenced. (2) Sparked by the economic crisis, the movement originated from the Wall Street protest movement that began in 2011 in New York’s financial district. People protested against what they saw as the undue influence of big corporations and banks on governments. Their famous slogan “We are the 99%” aims to highlight the wealth gap between the tiny minority of the richest of the rich and the rest of the population. When they were forced to leave Lower Manhattan, protesters spread to university campuses, banks and company headquarters as the concept of standing up against social inequality, corruption and greed snowballed around the world. (3) With umbrellas as the only protection against the police tear gas, demonstrations in Hong Kong in autumn 2014 harked back to both the Occupy Movement and the 1989 student protests in Tiananmen Square, brutally quashed by Chinese government tanks. What these idealistic youngsters in Hong Kong feared, was the gradual erosion of their democratic rights by China. The latter had been guaranteed in the ‘One country, two systems’ agreement when Hong Kong, a former British crown colony, was given back to China. While Western social media like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are generally blocked in China, Instagram is usually available. At the time of the protests, however, the photo- sharing application was also shut down so that images of Hong Kong’s young, friendly and super-polite protesters could not circulate and ignite further uprisings.
