Make connections Before reading the text on the next page, look at the title and pictures: • What do they make you think of? • What do you think this text is about? Sometimes texts can make you think of: • your life, your experiences, things you know • books, articles, films, songs, or texts • people or events Ask yourself: • Do you know another text like this? • Do you know a song like this? • Do you remember an event like this? 2. Start your KWL Before reading the text on the next page, make a KWL chart and take notes. (Fill in the third box after reading.) 3. Words you don’t understand To understand a text you don’t have to understand every word. You can … • skip the difficult word. • read to the end of the sentence or paragraph. • try a different word. • write down words you don’t know. • use your dictionary. 4. Get the main idea Read the text on the next page to get the main idea. 5. Get the details Read the text on the next page again to get some details. 6.
