54 Interaction Using the internet What is the internet? The internet is a network of computers all over the world. When you are connected to the internet, you can communicate with millions of computers all over the world. The internet can be used to look for information, send emails or messages, interact with people, play games, chat, listen to music, watch films or go shopping. The world wide web (www) is a part of the internet. It is a collection of billions 1 pages of information. The pages are linked to each other with “ hyperlinks ”. Hyperlinks are usually underlined: www.oebv.at If you click on a hyperlink, you will go to a different page. A web browser makes it possible for you to look at web pages. The most used web browsers are Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari . The address bar is the most important part of the browser. Every page on the internet has its own address. The address bar is used to enter this address, for example, www.oebv.at . To look for information on the internet you have to use a search engine . There are many search engines, like Yahoo, Bing and Google . A search engine scans all the pages on the internet to find the pages that you are looking for. For example, when you look for information about London, just type the word “ London ” into your search engine. The search engine now shows a list of results.
