MalalaYousafzai was born in 1997 in the Swat region of Pakistan. She became famous because she dared to campaign for the education of girls and for women’s rights in the Swat Valley, where girls were partly banned from going to school. She started a blog on the internet to document the situation of girls in Northern Pakistan. Through this blog she became a celebrity and the Western media started reporting on her activities. She was even nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize and also for the Nobel Peace Prize. In October 2012 local gunmen tried to kill her but she survived.
