Er lebte in einer Zeit, in der die Geschichte der USA von Krisen überschat- tet wurde. Viele seiner Lieder haben politische Texte, in denen er sich für die Leute einsetzte, die nicht vom „Amerikanischen Traum“ profitieren konnten. „This land is your land“ ist sein bekanntestes Lied. Viele Musiker haben eigene Strophen dazu gedichtet. Häufig behandeln diese Strophen politische Proble- me, die in der jeweiligen Zeit wichtig waren.
