Her favourite band is “Marty and the Smarty Surf de Woop,” the winners of the TV show “Star of America.” Now they are famous pop stars. She wants to be a pop star, too – but she can’t sing. Every year in spring it’s Caitlin’s birthday. This year it was really warm, so Caitlin wanted to have a birthday party in their garden. She asked her mum, “Mum, can I have a garden party for my birthday this year?” – “Why not?” her mum answered, “You can invite ten friends.” Caitlin went online and posted invitations to ten friends. She asked some friends from school, a few kids from her neighbourhood and some girls from the karate course. On the day of her birthday, Caitlin was very excited. She bought lots of balloons and confetti and decorated the garden. She made a cake and prepared food and drinks. And she checked her mobile phone for new messages every minute. There were seven messages: “I’m sorry, but I can’t come to your party.” Two friends were ill and had to stay in bed. Three others had to help their parents in the garden. And a girl and a boy from her neighbourhood were away with their grandparents. Caitlin was really sad, but in the end she said to herself: “It’s my day, and it’s my 5 10 15 20 25 party! I’ll have a lot of fun with three friends.” Caitlin wanted her party to start at four o’clock. But at four o’clock, nobody was there. At half past four Caitlin was still alone. Her mum said, “Don’t be sad. I’m sure your friends will come in a minute!” Caitlin waited and waited. At a quarter to five, her cousin Alexandra called her on her mobile. She said, “Hi Caitlin! Happy birthday! How are you?” Caitlin answered, “I’m so sad. It’s my birthday and I’m all alone.” Alexandra said, “Oh, poor Caitlin. Why don’t you come and meet me in the park?” Caitlin went to her mum and asked, “Mum, can I meet Alexandra in the park?” Her mum smiled and answered, “What are you waiting for? Get your bike and go to the park!” When Caitlin arrived at the park, she was really surprised. All her friends were there: Shannon and Paige, Jake, Mia and Aaron – and all the other kids. Caitlin saw a stage – and her favourite band “Marty and the Smarty Surf de Woop.” Marty called into the microphone: “And here comes Caitlin! Hello, birthday girl. Today is your day! Come and join us on stage, and we’ll sing a special song just for you.” – And there was her mum with a big smile on her face. 30 35 40 45 50 104 13 Unit Birthdays one hundred and four Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
