At the animal shelter Reading: A story a) Have a quick look at the story below and give it a title. 7j53jv 6 Last weekend the Webber family – Mr and Mrs Webber and their two sons George and Alex – drove to the animal shelter near Bakersville. There they had lots of pets to give away: dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, budgies and fish. Mr and Mrs Webber wanted to find a pet for their children, but they didn’t know which one they should get. Mr Webber said, “How about a dog? Dogs are really great pets. You can go for walks with them and you can play games in the park. They can fetch and carry things, too.” “Well, I don’t know,” said Mrs Webber. “I think dogs are absolutely terrible. They always jump on your bed, they’re often very dirty, and some dogs bark all night long.” “I’m a dog lover,” said Mr Webber. “I know, dear, but how about a rabbit?” said Mrs Webber. “Rabbits are fun pets. They love to hop and run.” – “Yeah, that’s right,” said George. “I think we should get a rabbit.” “Good idea,” said Alex. “Rabbits can also stand on two legs and can wiggle their ears. And we can teach them 5 10 15 20 tricks.” – “No way! Rabbits are terrible pets!” said Mr Webber. “They dig holes in the garden and eat your vegetables. I still think a dog is better.” “Well, how about a snake?” Mrs Webber asked her husband. “Great.” said Alex. “Snakes are very cool and clever pets.” “That’s true!” said George. “They can climb and slide. They can be very small, and the best thing is that they can also scare your friends.” “Snakes? You can’t be serious!” Mr Webber said. “Snakes are terrible, too. They are dangerous; they bite you and swallow you alive! I really think a dog is the best animal for our family. … And look!” Mr Webber said happily. “This little brown dog here is coming to me? Lovely. He knows a dog lover when he sees one!” A few seconds later the dog stood next to Mr Webber. Mr Webber turned to his wife to ask her if she liked the little brown dog, too. A moment later … “Hey, what’s that? No, no, no … Stop it! Oh my God! The dog has just peed on my leg,” said Mr Webber. Everybody laughed, and they took the dog home. 25 30 35 40 45 b) Read the story again. Tick T (= true) or F (= false). T (true) F (false) 1.
