Reading: Talking animals a) Read the story below. 10 My name is Timothy and I want to tell a strange story. I can’t believe it myself, but it really happened to me last Saturday. Last weekend my family and I didn’t really know what to do, so we went to the zoo. We left our apartment at 4 p.m. and arrived there at around 4.40 p.m. There were so many people at the zoo and all of them wanted to see the baby animals, especially the baby tigers. I wanted to see them too because tigers are my favourite animals. Unfortunately, we started our visit at the aquarium because my dad loves fish. Then we moved on to check out the bird cages. My sister likes birds, and she says that they are cute. She loves all kinds of birds: parrots, cockatoos, budgies; she has got two birds herself. She got them last year for Christmas. Then we went to see the hippos because they are my mum’s favourite animals. Last year my parents made a trip to Africa, and there they saw a lot of hippos in the wild. That’s the reason why my mum can’t get enough of them – don’t ask me why; to me they seem dull. They sit in the mud all day and relax. 5 10 15 20 Finally we got to the big cats’ area. This is a huge area where you can find really big cats like lions, panthers and tigers. My favourite part of the big cats’ area is the one with Siberian and Bengal tigers. It was too bad that I didn’t see anything because there were so many people. So I looked for a good spot and walked around till I found one. Finally I saw the baby tiger. Suddenly, it looked at me, and I couldn’t believe my ears: It said my name and started talking to me. The baby tiger came closer and told me that it was very happy, but sometimes there were too many people at the zoo. Then it said goodbye and walked away. When we got home, I told my sister about the talking baby tiger. “Something happened to me at the zoo,” I said. “The baby tiger talked to me. Am I crazy?” “No, you’re not,” my sister said. “That happens to me all the time.” 25 30 35 40 b) Look at the pictures below and number them from 1 to 6.
