Fact detectives: Mountain biking a) Take a look at the picture. b) Now close your book and try to remember as many parts of a mountain bike as you can. Make a list with a partner. Who has the longest list? c) Read this text and look up the words you don’t know in a dictionary or on the internet. Mountain biking is really popular with kids today. A mountain bike has very strong tyres and excellent shock absorbers. You need these because a rocky trail can be very hard and bumpy! Your bike needs many gears to help you climb a mountain trail. Coming down can be dangerous – so you need good brakes to stop your bike. Of course, if you’re on a bike, you should always wear a helmet, especially on a mountain bike. It’s also a good idea to wear special gloves to protect your hands, and knee pads and elbow pads too. Mountain biking is great fun, but it’s also good exercise! You sweat a lot and you may get very thirsty. So always bring some water with you, and drink regularly. And don’t forget a puncture repair kit if you get a flat tyre. There are no bicycle repair shops in the mountains … d) What do you do to protect yourself?
