Scene 1: In Grumpland Listening Listen to scene 1 of the play. JEMMA, SAM, LUCY, and RORY are trying to find the way out of the woods near Jemma’s house. But there are so many TREES. Sam: It was this way, guys. Lucy: No, Sam, it was this way. Jemma: I don’t like it here, Lucy, it’s getting dark. Rory: Look! I can see some light! That must be the way out! They enter a bright land with many TREES. In the trees there is strange fruit. KIP, a servant boy, is collecting wood. He hides behind a fruit tree when the children enter. Jemma: Huh? This is not Windsor Road. W-where are we? Sam: Wow, look at that cool castle on the hill! Lucy: It wasn’t there before. How did it get there? Rory: Look, there’s some weird fruit on these trees! Lucy: They look like … big … orange and blue footballs! Rory tries to pick a fruit. Behind his tree, Kip puts his hand to his mouth in horror. Jemma: (worried) Rory, what are you doing?! Rory: (picks a fruit) I want to see if these things taste good. Trees: We’re jub-jub trees, our fruit is sweet! But only for the King to eat! Rory: (falls over in surprise) T-the trees … they … they talked ! Lucy: Don’t be silly, Rory, trees can’t talk! Trees: Oh yes, we can! We’re jub-jub trees, our fruit is sweet! But only for the King to eat! Kip: (comes out from behind the tree) It’s true, if the King’s guards catch you, they’ll put you in prison. Jemma, Sam, Lucy and Rory: Hello, who are you? Kip: My name’s Kip, I’m collecting wood for King Grump. He lives in that castle. All the jub-jub fruit in Grumpland is for the King. The people can only eat cabbage and turnips. Sam: Only cabbage and turnips? Yuk! The sound of a whistle. Kip: Oh no! It’s the King’s guards! Hide the fruit! Rory panics and throws the fruit to Sam. He throws it to Lucy. Lucy throws it to Jemma and she throws it to Rory. The King’s GUARDS enter. Chief Guard / All Guards: He’s stealing the King’s fruit! Take him! Rory: I … I … I don’t want it, you can have it! (Rory throws the fruit to the Guards.) The Guards catch the children. Chief Guard: (pointing to the castle) Take them all to King Grump! Jemma: (worried) Oh!
