Prime Time 3, Coursebook

A trip to London Reading: Shakespeare’s Globe a) Skim the interview about London’s famous theatre and put the parts in the correct order. ms77q3 Skills Reading skill: Skimming To skim a text means to read it very quickly to understand the general meaning. S 4 Interviewer: One more question, why are there no chairs in the middle part of the theatre? Patrick: Well, in the middle part people usually stood during a performance, which is why it cost one old penny to watch a play, but two pennies if you wanted to sit under cover in the gallery. Interviewer: Thank you for answering my questions, Patrick. Interviewer: Why is it round? Patrick: It is round so that many people can gather round, as you say, and watch the play. This way, people could get closer to the actors. In Shakespeare’s time it could hold between 1000 and 2000 people. Interviewer: Patrick Spottiswoode is the Director of Globe Education. Patrick, can you tell us what is so special about the Globe Theatre? Patrick: Well, it is a theatre that looks exactly like the ones in Shakespeare’s time; it is a round building, and in the middle it has no roof. Interviewer: So many? And is it the same today? Patrick: We certainly hope so! The original theatre burned down in 1613, and of course we don’t have any photos or videos from that time. But we did our best to rebuild it as accurately as possible, we built it 150 metres from where it first stood. b) Read the interview again and tick T (= true) or F (= false). T F 1.
