127 Read the text about treating yourself fairly. Some words are missing. Complete the text by writing one word for each gap (1–13) in the spaces provided. The first one (0) has been done for you. LANGUAGE IN USE 16 Accept yourself, and your life will change For many people, self-acceptance is hard to come by, even on a good day. It’s tenuous, a glass with tiny cracks, at best. On a bad day, when you’ve made a mistake or two, don’t like how you look, or when you feel absolutely miserable, your self-acceptance is in shards. Fortunately, self-acceptance is (0) we can nurture. I, for example, am (1) introverted guy who prefers to be in quiet places. I hated this about myself. After all, those weren’t the guys who got all the ladies. I wanted to (2) that guy who everyone flocked to and paid attention to. If only I could appear more confident, (3) people would be interested in me. But, to be honest, I wasn’t using what I already had. (4) of trying to be someone I’m not, I now embrace and accept the person I already am. When you are aware of what you’re really good (5) , doors will open for you because you are able to walk through them. Everyone has a unique perspective and something to offer the world (6) them. Often, we can’t see those opportunities because we are so caught up in what we think we should have done or who we think we should be. In the past, I wanted to be stronger, (7) looking, more interesting, more successful. I compared myself to people I wanted to be, and when I didn’t live (8) to those standards, I was even harder on myself. I used (9) believe that I was, in fact, a failure. It’s as if there is one definition of failure, and I was certainly convinced I was THE definition. I often forgot that the people I wanted to be (10) were also people themselves who were struggling too. The (11) is, we try many things in life and not everything is going to work (12) as we planned. Nobody gets everything right, and when people do get it right, they’ve often failed many times to get to that point. When you accept yourself (13) you already are, you will enjoy the life you have right now. When you stop trying to be someone else, you begin to realise that there are actually more people who share similar interests and values and have a personality like yours. It’s actually quite easy, and you’ll find that people are basically the same and want the same things you do. So, it’s important to say: I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and people like me! 0 something 7 1 8 2 9 3 10 4 11 5 12 6 13 Write a forum entry for a website where young people try to figure out things together and make life better for each other.
