173 Sample answer E-scooters are a short-lived mode of transport In our fast-paced world, people are constantly looking for different modes of transport and alternatives to cars. Consequently, e-scooters have become popular, but they are not a long-term solution to our transport needs. E-scooters are not convenient to use year-round, they pose a serious danger to users and pedestrians alike, and they have a negative impact on existing traffic. Although e-scooters are convenient for some journeys, they cannot replace cars or public transport. Firstly, they are not usable in bad weather conditions such as ice or snow, with the result that they cannot be used all year round. Secondly, most people want to carry their belongings and shopping, but these cannot be easily or safely transported on an e-scooter. Also, they are inconvenient for longer journeys as they are relatively slow compared to public transport. Therefore, if one wishes to travel comfortably all year round, an e-scooter is not a suitable alternative. It could be argued that e-scooters are safe compared to other modes of transport, but they pose a serious risk to both users and the general public. Users often encounter uneven road surfaces and are likely to fall and injure themselves. Additionally, most riders travel too fast and risk injuring not only themselves, but also pedestrians around them, especially young children or senior citizens, who are unable to get out of the way quickly enough. Moreover, many e-scooter riders are not easily visible in crowds, increasing the chance of accidents. For safety reasons, e-scooters will not become a long-term means of transport. We do need to cut down the amount of traffic on the roads, but e-scooters are not the solution. They slow down traffic as riders are required to travel on the road, and this hinders cars and buses alike, meaning that there is no benefit to the general traffic situation. Furthermore, many e-scooters are left lying around the pavements, forcing pedestrians to step into the road to pass them, further slowing other traffic. Some are even left across entries and driveways, hindering cars and delivery vans. Thus, the general traffic situation cannot be relieved by e-scooters. In conclusion, e-scooters are inconvenient for much of the year and do not allow users to transport their belongings easily. More crucially, they are a grave danger to the general public’s safety, and finally, they worsen traffic congestion rather than relieving it. Thus, e-scooters will not be a solution for the problems encountered with traffic in the future.
