44 Unit 03 | Up to the job Discuss in small groups in which situations you would write an email of application apart from when applying for a job. Then make a list of things you would include in such an email. Put the tips for writing a successful email of application in the correct order. READING 14 a b A It is important to explain why you’re writing. State where you saw the job being advertised, the date when the job ad was posted, and whether it was published on the company’s website or posted on a job search board. You may include information that shows you know something about the company and what it does. B Thank the recipient for reading your email/considering your application and mention that your CV is attached. Make sure to explain how you will follow up or how the recipient can get in touch with you. Include your desire to schedule an interview or even a phone call where you can learn more about the position. C You can also include your email signature, which is an easy way to provide contact information to recipients. D Since hiring managers receive a lot of emails, make it easy for them to filter application emails. Include your name and the job title you are applying for in the message’s subject line. If a job has been assigned a posting number, provide this as well. E Use a polite close, such as Yours faithfully if you don’t know the name of the recipient, or Sincerely, to sign off your letter. Then type your full name. F In your salutation, address your email to a specific person. Sometimes you can determine this by reviewing the company’s website or by calling their front office to ask who manages their job searches. If a name isn’t available, you can open with Dear Sir or Madam or with To Whom It May Concern. G You can make a pitch for your candidacy in the main part of your letter. Why would you be a good fit for the job? Highlight qualifications, relevant work experience and responsibilities as well as accomplishments. Discuss with a partner which of the tips above you find really useful. You have read the job ads below on a website for international jobs and decided to write an email to apply for one of them. c WRITING 15 The Golden Lion Hotel (Dover, UK) is looking for a part-time night receptionist for weekend duties.
