Agree on two or three that you would like to suggest to the members of the youth forum. use less paper use less plastic in packed lunches provide more waste separation bins provide reusable dishes for school events your own idea … SPEAKING 31 Strategies box Tips for doing a paired activity 1 Study the situational context carefully: What’s the setting of your task? What’s the topic? What’s the aim of your discussion? Is it to agree on two or three aspects, to rank your ideas according to your preferences, or to make a suggestion based on the aspects you have discussed? 2 Look at the content points you need to discuss. Come up with ideas for each of them and support them with examples and reasons. Also, listen to your partner’s ideas and pick up on them. 3 Present an idea of your own if the task requires you to do so. Make sure it addresses the topic under discussion. For example, regarding the task above you could suggest composting food waste on the school premises if this is possible. 4 Remember not to worry if you can’t agree at the end of the discussion. What really counts is your ability to negotiate well. 5 Keep the discussion strategies presented in way2go! 5 and 6 in mind: Take turns speaking. Each of you should have about the same speaking time. Let your partner know that you understand what he/she says. Interrupt your partner politely to express your own view if necessary. Invite your partner politely to voice his/her opinion. Write a PEEL paragraph of around 120 words on one of the following topics: 1 Why do people believe glass bottles are more environmentally friendly than plastic bottles? 2 “Recycling glass is a waste of energy.” Do you agree? 3 Would people refrain from getting plastic bags if they cost €2 per bag? See Writing coach, PEEL, p. 165. WRITING 30 You volunteered with a clean-up project collecting plastic waste along the River Thames.
