99 Give a 5-minute talk on gender differences in which you: compare the situations shown in the pictures (student A)/discuss the quote (student B) describe situations in which men and women aren’t treated equally suggest how equality can be achieved Strategies box Tips for doing an individual long turn (preparation time: 10 minutes) 1 Make good use of your preparation time: Brainstorm ideas and cluster them. Group them into more and less important ones, draw mind maps and make lists of possible pros and cons, chances and challenges or benefits and obstacles, depending on the task. Never write down complete sentences, and avoid reading from your notes. Remember, your talk should be a presentation, so you want to keep eye contact with your audience and – again, depending on the task – inform or convince it of your ideas. Start your presentation with one or two introductory sentences and end it in a powerful way. 2 Always follow the order in which the content points are arranged as they will help you give a wellrounded talk. Make sure you can elaborate on each of them for a bit more than 1 ½ minutes. Try to move elegantly from one content point to the next. When dealing with content points 2 and 3, it is possible to briefly come back to a previous content point (e.g. a chart or a quote) if it makes sense for the presentation. 3 Content point 1 requires you to deal with a prompt. This can consist of pictures, a cartoon, a chart, a quote, a blog, etc. Prepare for it well as it is the beginning of your presentation and links to the following content points. Remember what the different function words (describe, present, analyse, discuss, compare, contrast, etc.) require you to do. For instance, note the difference between simply comparing two pictures or comparing the ideas presented in them. 4 Expanding content points 2 and 3 usually involves giving relevant supporting details, such as evidence/examples and explanations. Again, the function words will tell you how to deal with each of the content points. Try to apply the PEEL strategy where possible, and avoid talking about yourself or your own experience unless the task asks you to do so. Individual long turn: Do this with a partner. Student A compares the situations shown in the pictures, student B discusses the quote. Then both do content points 2 and 3. Study the tips below before doing the task.
