51 Speaking ï An oral examination in English consists of two parts, an individual long turn and a paired activity. For the individual long turn, you will have a preparation time of around 10 minutes. Then you should speak for around 5 minutes. The paired activity should be spontaneous. You will have little or no time at all to prepare for it, which, however, won’t matter as you will want to listen and respond to what your partner says. While the individual long turn is basically a presentation, a successful paired activity will also focus on your ability to listen carefully to your partner and to react accordingly. The paired activity should last for around 10 minutes, with each of the partners ideally filling the same amount of speaking time. Working on individual long turns As the individual long turn should be a presentation, it is advisable to keep eye contact with your audience and only briefly look at your notes. Never write down complete sentences during your preparation time, this will only result in you reading out sentences, which should be avoided. Instead, think of a powerful way to start and end your presentation. An individual long turn usually opens with a prompt. This could be pictures, a chart, a cartoon, a video clip or a verbal prompt, such as a quote or part of a blog. You will be asked to start with this prompt and then deal with further content points (bullet points), which will help you to give a well-rounded presentation. The following exercises will focus on different kinds of prompts and how to deal with them.1 Dealing with different kinds of prompts Look at the different prompts below and decide which topic they might refer to. 1 1 For how to deal with content points 2 and 3, see page 57. I feel sorry for the dogs … I really can’t see why people who live in small apartments in cities keep big dogs. I just feel sorry for the dogs that have to be kept on a lead whenever they go out. And the small parks around those big apartment buildings should be reserved for children, not for dogs … D “Children begin by loving their parents; as they grow older, they judge them; sometimes they forgive them.” (Oscar Wilde) E C A Average amount of time spent on schoolwork on Sundays ten years ago this year age group 14–15 age group 16–17 age group 18–19 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% B Nur zu Prüfzweck n – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
