A good deed Talk together. What would you do if you saw someone: 1 stealing someone’s bag or mobile phone? 2 in trouble on the underground? 3 pushing an old man in the street? 4 robbing a shop or bank? Example: I’d probably shout, so the person would realise someone was stealing their bag. Tell the class. Would you do the same or different things? Read three news stories. Which are about acts of kindness? Which are about acts of bravery? a Reading 6 b 7 a A man who rescued a driver from a car, which had been driven into Lopez Lake on Friday, was fired because he could not make it into work after the rescue. David Warne, a 29-year-old father of two from San Luis Obispo, California, risked his life by diving into the lake, braving sharp rocks to save a 40-year-old man whose car had broken through a guard rail into the water. He could simply have called the rescue services but decided to jump in himself to save time. Mr Warne was only three days into his job with Paradise Pool Interiors, but when he phoned his boss to tell her he could not work due to the deep cuts on his feet and arms, he was told he no longer had a job. He could hardly believe this. “I rang her and said, ‘I’ve saved a guy who would have drowned in his car if I had not helped. I’ve got to go to hospital to get stitched up,’”Mr Warne said. Owner Lesley Burke was not impressed by the good deed. A spokesman for the company said: “If Mr Warne had worked here longer, it would have been different.” However, San Luis Obispo Police have recommended Mr Warne for a bravery award, which he certainly deserves. We asked David Warne if he thinks he shouldn’t have acted the way he did and thought about his job duties first, and he said: “Absolutely not. If we don’t help each other anymore, what happens to society?” 1 A small village in Mexico is richer than it was, thanks to a wealthy widow who died recently and left all her money to the village. She wanted to thank people for welcoming her at the time when she moved there. If she had not been offered free meals and a room at the mayor’s house when she arrived, she would not have survived. She couldn’t have stayed in her hometown due to drug gang wars. In her will she declared that everyone over 60 should receive 10,000 pesos, while other gifts included 200,000 pesos to the local church where her husband was buried. “Rosa Flores was a lovely lady,” said a neighbour, who a reporter was talking to after the funeral: “She helped me with my household chores when I was sick. She always did favours for people. She could have used her money to have some extra comfort in the last years, but she lived cheaply, saving for others. I think she was lonely after her husband died because she had no children. If she’d had a family, she probably wouldn’t have left all her money to the village. We’re very, very grateful to her.” 2 “Seriously, I’ve got a gun. Give me the money.” So shouted robber Robert Hendry as he burst into a bank in Portsmouth in England, his gun hand hidden in a bag. Terrified staff were about to do what he’d asked, when a customer who’d been quietly reading his paper walked up to Hendry and said, “You’re joking, aren’t you, mate?” and took the empty bag. Then Terry Parker sat down and went on with his reading. Hendry ran away. “If Mr Parker hadn’t got involved,” said John Anderson, the bank manager, “then I’m sure the man would have got what he wanted and robbed the bank.” 3 Language skills Extras Explore 9 Living and working together 113 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
