Curtis Road, Boise, Idaho 25 May 2021 Dear Mr Adams, With respect to the article “Urban Waste Management of 20 May 20.., I would like to express my reservations against strictly separating household waste. I am particularly referring to plastics. As a senior university lecturer on packaging technology with a focus on plastics production, I am truly familiar with the lack of knowledge surrounding the complex world of plastics. In my opinion it is crucial to draw attention to a key issue in the plastics recycling debate: contamination by “wrong items”, such as the compostable bags now becoming widely used in supermarkets (see Letters, 14 May). Just one or two such bags can contaminate an entire batch, and even I find it hard to be certain of the exact composition of many of the bags I receive. So, by simply putting what the average citizen considers plastic into the plastics trash, we do more damage than good! Only certain types of plastic can be reused properly. Imagine the sorting process that has to be carried out, which will never result in pure recyclable plastic for further processing. As a result, my conclusion is exactly opposite to what we are currently doing: we should stop separating all household waste and simply burn it, recovering the energy from the plastics in efficient plants, with carbon dioxide recovery to reduce global warming. It’s called the appliance of science. To sum up, it is obvious that there is more to plastic than the average person knows about. When recycling we should ask ourselves how environmentally friendly the recycling process really is and not shy away from unpopular ideas like not separating waste anymore.
