Unit 10, exercise 19a Student B Athletes need to speak out against drugs, says Ulmer Sarah Ulmer, poster girl for Drug Free Sport NZ, has said that athletes need to do more in the fight against drug use in sport. “I think we need more current athletes being more vocal about drug use and about how they feel competing against drug cheats.” Ulmer, an international athlete herself who has represented New Zealand on the world stage, said that the sport needed to create a stronger antidrugs culture. “If a drugs ‘culture’ exists in certain sports, then we as clean athletes should work to create a far stronger anti-drugs culture to oppose it. I think this is something that could have a huge effect.” She said that ‘drug-cheats’ should be given huge financial penalties, and that more athletes should be banned for life “to really get the drug-takers thinking about what is at stake if they cheat”. She said that similar campaigns could be adopted by other countries.
