It was quite an experience! After I had typed in all the information requested, the site said my login number was invalid and shut down. So, I had to start all over and I got past the page where you are asked to enter your ID and password. When I clicked, ‘continue’, the site answered, “the information you entered was incorrect, call customer service”. I was getting annoyed and called customer service. The attendant asked me to enter the same information again. I did, and the site said, “your account has been locked, call customer service.” The attendant unlocked it, but the site continued with the loop, “the information you entered is incorrect” or “your account has been locked”. After an hour on the phone, I gave up and did what I thought I would never have to do: I walked to the bank, queued, and after another hour the transfer I wanted to make was done; of course with a surcharge because I did not do it online … don’t ask. A Ensure that the website where you enter your online banking details is the correct one. Hackers can create a site that looks very similar to a legitimate site. Don’t give account numbers, ID’s or social security numbers to an unfamiliar person or company. Your bank will never contact you to ask for your e-banking details. It is best to type in the web address itself. Links in email messages, text messages or pop-up ads can take you to websites that look legitimate but are not. Before you enter sensitive data on a web page, make sure the web address begins with ‘https’: the ‘s’ stands for secure. Additionally, if you have an encrypted connection, you will notice a closed padlock icon either next to the web address or in the lower right corner of the screen. Watch out for scams! Be suspicious of emails that contain information on deals that sound too good to be true. These emails could be the work of cyber criminals trying to get hold of your financial data.
