It proved impossible to arrange the work around childcare responsibilities and she decided to leave the fire service. During the following 18 months Jack lived on benefits, kept looking for work, and moved from relative affluence to poverty and financial hardship. That was when Monroe started writing the blog A Girl Called Jack, in which she shared cheap recipes created as a single parent with a young child aiming to provide family meals for less than £10 per week.
