Even though soaring unemployment rates did not occur again, the line graph illustrates a steady rise in unemployed young people until 2016. Interestingly, after this last peak at 11.2%, unemployment among young Austrians continued to decline to 8.5% in 2019. Conclusion Concluding, one can say that youth unemployment remains a serious issue in Austria with about 2.5% more young people unemployed in 2019 compared to 20 years earlier. Nevertheless, employment opportunities increased continuously in the years following 2016. Recommendations As the trend in the years from 2016 to 2019 shows, special education and re-training programmes are effective. Yet, the developments in the period under investigation suggest that such programmes have not shown the desired effect during economic crises. It might prove useful to implement speedy relief measures at the early stages to avoid skyrocketing youth unemployment in the future.
