Report one idea back to the class. 11 3D printing One highly advanced production process is 3D printing, which is also known as ‘additive manufacturing’. Do you know why? Talk in pairs. Read the definition to check. Were your ideas correct? Look at the objects below. 1 Can all of them be produced with 3D printers? 2 What materials can be used? 3 What designs are possible? Speaking 9 a 3D printing noun a manufacturing process for making a physical object from a three-dimensional digital model. To print a 3D object, the manufacturer uses a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) program to create a digital model that gets sliced into very thin cross-sections called ‘layers’. During the printing process, the 3D printer starts at the bottom of the design and builds up successive layers of material until the object is finished. b 10 a Look at the pictures. How do you think these things might be made? Work in three groups. Read the information and follow the instructions. ■■ Group A – read about making Maldon salt on p. 208. ■■ Group B – read about making glass bottles on p. 210. ■■ Group C – read about making axes on p. 212. Get into A/B/C groups and give each other your tours. Ask questions to make sure you understand the process. Speaking 8 a Maldon salt glass bottles axes b c Go back to your group.
