130 Unit 08 | Culture vulture When expressing an opinion on a complex topic, it’s important to be fair, balanced and precise in order to make your arguments credible. The expressions in green in the sentences below can help you to achieve this. Read them and choose the correct option. 1 Young people are said to have little interest in live theatre. While this may be true to some level / extent / grade, it is important to remember that many teenagers are passionate actors. 2 Broadly / Roughly / Inconsiderately speaking, live theatre tends to attract an older audience, but this does not mean that there are no young people in the audience at all. 3 For / In / On some cases, young theatre-goers are even more enthusiastic and knowledgeable than their older counterparts. 4 It is often claimed that streaming services have replaced live theatre. Although it is relatively / consequently / certainly true that these platforms are highly popular, this view is somewhat exaggerated. 5 On the one side / hand / part, I enjoy going to the theatre, but on the other side / hand / part, I am reluctant to spend a lot of money on tickets. 6 People may not know much about Shakespeare. Talk to as many people in your class as possible. You should find out: how often they go to the theatre, who they go with, how much they are willing to spend on tickets for live theatre performances whether they think it is a better experience to attend live performances of classical plays at a local theatre or to watch recorded versions at home or at school (ask them to explain their reasons) how they think live theatre could be made more appealing to young people Write a report about the results of your survey. In your report you should: summarise your classmates’ habits regarding live theatre performances analyse how they prefer to experience classical plays suggest ways to make live theatre more appealing to young audiences Divide your report into sections and give them headings.
