162 Unit 10 | Iceberg and outback What tips would you give young travellers to help them learn more about the cultures they encounter on their journeys? Talk in groups. Read the text on learning about new cultures while travelling. Some words are missing. Change each word in brackets to form an appropriate word for each gap (1–10). Write only one word in each space provided. The first one (0) has been done for you. LANGUAGE IN USE 12 a b Travel broadens the mind By Sarah Johnson Travel is often praised for bridging the gap between cultures. There are (0) (count) classes, books, articles and people that claim they can teach you how to understand an unfamiliar culture. In order to truly appreciate a culture, you must let go of prior biases and judgements you might bring to the table. This can be one of the hardest things to do since we are frequently (1) (aware) of our own thought processes. The best approach is not to judge. Whenever you catch yourself thinking negatively about the way people behave, or when something seems (2) (ridicule), just take a step back and remember that everyone sees the world differently. There is no right or wrong, just different ways of living life. It also helps to talk to the locals, so learn the language. No matter where you are (3) (travel), the local language of the place you’re staying in is unlikely to be English. Take the time to learn the local language and show people that you are interested in their culture. You might feel (4) (anxiety) about speaking a foreign language, but even if you sound completely (5) (fool), people will appreciate the effort. Plus, it can be pretty endearing – like when you’re trying to roll your Rs while speaking Spanish to your new friends in Madrid. In an unfamiliar environment, there are things that you aren’t used to, but instead of avoiding new experiences, embrace them. It’s okay to feel (6) (comfort); in fact, it is one of the best things that you can ever do. Maybe the thought of eating a worm makes you feel (7) (dread), but if you’re in Namibia and it’s offered as a gesture of hospitality, you eat that worm with a smile. By facing (8) (certain) head-on, you will discover just how well you can adapt to unexpected circumstances. You have to genuinely want to learn about other ways of life, otherwise you never will. Observe people, marvel at the (9) (exist) of anything that is new to you, and embrace new lifestyles and cultures with wonder and (10) (curious). You will find yourself shifting your perspective without even noticing. 0 countless 6 1 7 2 8 3 9 4 10 5 Prepare a short statement (about 90 seconds long): Do you agree with the advice given in the text?
