There are an estimated 476 million indigenous people living in 90 countries worldwide. Indigenous people make up more than 10 percent of the global population and speak over 50 percent of the roughly 7,000 languages used around the world. Many of these traditional languages are in danger of disappearing as younger generations no longer learn them. However, recent efforts have shown a growing commitment to preserving indigenous languages and keeping them alive. The sporting event ‘World Indigenous Games’ was first held in 2015 and again in 2017. Some of the disciplines include football, archery, canoeing, road bicycle racing, darts, spear throwing, log races and swimming. Competitors don’t wear sports attire but compete barefoot and in body paint. Indigenous communities thrive by living in harmony with the environment. Research shows that where indigenous groups have control of the land, forests and biodiversity tend to flourish. Their lifestyles in many of the world’s tropical rainforests are more harmful and threatening to the environment than the lifestyles of industrialised countries. Their connections to the land and water run deep. Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
