188 WRITING COACH A report is a document that presents information which is based on evidence and research. Reports are typically written about projects, incidents or events. They are usually written for an institution or a person in charge who has requested the document. A report uses formal and polite language. A report follows a clear structure, with sections and headings that make it easy for the reader to absorb the information. The header includes the date when it was written, the name of the writer and the subject of the report. This is followed by the introduction, which briefly explains what the report is about and why it was written. The main body consists of sections with headings which indicate the topic of the section.
