189 Sample answer Date: 12 November 2026 From: Linus Petridis, class 7c Subject: Student choir (ages 10 to 13) This report outlines the reasons for establishing a junior choir for students aged 10 to 13 at our school. It explains why choir singing is beneficial for children and how students could be encouraged to join the new choir. The value of establishing a junior choir Currently, our school does not have a choir for students under the age of 14. As a result, many younger students who enjoy music and singing miss the chance to develop their musical talents. Moreover, a choir for this age group could perform at school events such as the annual Christmas party, adding to the festive atmosphere. With enough practice and experience, the choir could even take part in external events, which would help to improve the school’s reputation in the community. Advantages of choir singing for students According to recent studies, choir singing benefits young people both socially and academically. For example, a recent survey of 500 parents of young teenagers revealed that the majority of children who sing in a choir have a lot of friends (86%), compared to only 63% of those who are not members of a choir. Similarly, 78% of choir singers were described as spending a lot of time with friends; this proportion is considerably lower among non-singers (48%). Choir participation also appears to support academic success: around half of singers are top students in mathematics (47%), compared to 38% of non-singers. The difference is even greater in English, where 54% of choir members achieve top grades, versus 43% of their non-singing peers. Furthermore, approximately two thirds of parents stated that their child’s overall academic performance had improved since joining a choir. Generating student interest in the junior choir There are several strategies that can be used to make the choir appealing to students once it has been established. Most importantly, rehearsals should be relaxed and enjoyable. In addition, students should be allowed to help choose some of the songs for the programme, as this will motivate them to attend rehearsals regularly and work on their singing skills. Finally, the choir should have many opportunities to perform at school events. This will give students the chance to practise while also developing a sense of pride in their achievements. In conclusion, setting up a junior choir would not only create meaningful opportunities for personal, social and academic growth for younger students at our school, but also benefit school life as a whole and contribute positively to the school’s image in the wider community.
