The language below the table will help you to describe and analyse charts. Talk about details only if they are significant, and group similar things. What major differences or changes does the chart/ graph show? B What are the possible reasons for the differences or changes? What do the results or trends tell you about the topic or the survey participants? Why are these findings important, and who do they affect? Can you predict any future developments? C What type of chart is it (bar chart/pie chart/line graph)? What is the data or survey about? What information is provided about the survey participants? What do the different sections of the graph represent? Starting: The chart shows/depicts/gives an overview of/illustrates/highlights/ deals with/compares … Pointing out the significance of the information given: There has been a dramatic change …; In comparison to …, the number of … has fallen considerably; There is a remarkable difference between … and …; The number of … is certainly impressive … Describing numbers (e.g. percent): A large proportion; a significant majority; a small number; only a minority; approximately two thirds; almost half; just over a third; exactly a quarter; only one in ten; more/less than a fifth … Describing change: The numbers increase/go up/climb/reach a peak … The numbers decrease/go down/fall/decline … The numbers don’t change/remain stable/remain steady/stay constant … Listen to two students talking about chart 2 on the next page. Pay attention to what aspects of the chart they focus on and how they do it. Who does a better job of analysing the chart? Why do you think so?
