44 Unit 03 | Coming home Read the texts on this double page. In texts 1–4, people describe what they are looking for in a place to live. In texts A–C, people talk about their living experiences. Which texts from the left and right pages describe the same type of living arrangement? Which text doesn’t go with anything? READING 8 Peter I wouldn’t be too keen on living with other people. I like my privacy and, if I’m honest, a touch of luxury. I’d make an ideal tenant as I’m tidy and wouldn’t bother the other residents in the building. Having decent facilities in the kitchen including a dishwasher and washing machine would be really important to me. I’m not a fan of doing my own cleaning, so I would want to hire someone to take care of that. This would also free up more time for me to focus on my studies. Money’s not an issue; I can afford to live on my own. I’d love a place on the top floor; having a great view would be a real bonus. 1 Deniz As far as I’m concerned, if you have a roof over your head, it doesn’t matter too much what the place is like. I definitely don’t need any luxuries as a student. What matters most to me is having a desk to work at, somewhere to store my books and being near uni. I really don’t want a long commute – the closer to uni, the better. I’m quite environmentally conscious, so driving’s a no-go for me (not that I could afford a car anyway). I’d need a couple of bookshelves for my books and somewhere to hang a few clothes. An en-suite bathroom would be a nice extra, but it’s not a dealbreaker – I’m fine sharing facilities with others. I’d actually quite like a communal kitchen; this would give me the chance to get to know a few people. 2 Zahra I’ll be getting a monthly allowance from my parents, and then I can afford a small amount of rent. Ideally, I’d like to get together with some other students and share a place so I can have a ready-made social life. I’m quite sociable and enjoy going out, but I’m just as happy staying in and watching a film. I’m generally pretty tidy and don’t mind doing a bit of vacuuming, cleaning or laundry now and then, as long as the others aren’t too untidy and do their share. Luckily, my dad is an electrician. If anything broke, he’d be able to help out with repairs. He could even do things like install extra sockets so everyone can charge their devices. 3 Cheryl I’m about to start my first ever job, which is both exciting and a bit nerve-wracking. I won’t be earning that much to begin with, so I’ll need affordable accommodation that’s fully furnished. I grew up in the city near my new workplace and my family home is still close by. To be honest, I don’t really want to bother moving all my junk out, especially since I get on pretty well with my family. That said, I really value my independence and going out with my mates in the evenings, so I won’t be home all that much anyway. I haven’t got a car, but fortunately we have access to public transport. 4 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
