READING 21 a Which of the reasons for using public transport do you find most convincing? Discuss in small groups. b Public transport – the only way to go! (1) If you want to do your bit for the environment, getting public transport and leaving the car at home is one of the most effective things you can do. Car journeys contribute significantly to our overall carbon footprint. In fact, nearly half of all car journeys are for short distances that could easily be completed using more sustainable alternatives. Plus, many buses now run on electricity or hydrogen, making public transport an even greener alternative. (2) The great thing about public transport is that it takes you where you want to go, when you need to be there, especially in cities and towns. Instead of driving into a congested area and getting stuck in a maze of one-way streets and heavy traffic, you can travel straight to your destination. And you get the added bonus of sitting back, relaxing with a newspaper and letting someone else do the driving. (3) Trains, buses and trams can sometimes be delayed, but getting from A to B is fast and often direct, thanks to increasing investment in new train, tram and bus lines in many European cities. (4) Contrary to popular belief, nearly all forms of public transport cost travellers less. If you regularly visit a place or are planning a trip in advance, you can buy season tickets or book tickets ahead of time at a lower price. The cost of owning a car goes well beyond just petrol or energy, which can already be very expensive. Using public transport means you avoid costs like car insurance and tax, as well as the ongoing expense of maintaining your vehicle. (5) One of the most frustrating things about driving a car or motorbike is the hunt for a parking space once you reach your destination. Parking is often scarce, and usually expensive. The advantage of using public transport is that you can simply hop off and go. Parking can add extra time and cost to your journey. So, all things considered, there is no real alternative to public transport. Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
