Dedication for life (or even beyond) Greyfriars Bobby was a Skye Terrier who lived in Edinburgh in the late 19th century. His fame comes from the fact that he is said to have guarded his master’s grave for fourteen years before dying himself. A statue erected in his honour and his nearby gravestone have become popular tourist attractions. The gravestone reads: “Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all.” An award for bravery The Dickin Medal was created in 1943 in the UK by a woman called Maria Dickin to recognise the work done by animals in the military. So far, the medal has been awarded 69 times, with most of the awards going to dogs (pigeons coming in as a close second). One of the most famous recipients is Bing, a UK army dog who parachuted over enemy territory twice during the Second World War. A book about his life was published in 2012. Dog’s Got Talent The popular UK talent show Britain’s Got Talent has actually been won by dogs not just once, but twice, in both 2012 and 2015. The 2012 winner Pudsey was called “one of the best dancing dogs I’ve ever seen” by one of the judges. The triumph of Matisse in 2015 caused some controversy as it was later revealed that one of the tricks in the final act was actually performed by a different dog of the same trainer.
