Very often parents who have different first languages want to bring up their children bilingually – that means that the children grow up with both languages as their mother tongues. Many parents report that their children have no difficulties learning two languages at the same time. In fact it can be a big advantage for their later lives because young children remember the sounds and the meaning of a word very easily. They get the feel for the language and this is something they will never forget. However, these children often have enormous problems when they have to do grammar exercises in one of their mother tongues, because they have learned the languages by copying their parents or other people around them and do not know the rules of these languages.
