In 1948, two brothers, Dick and Mac McDonald, opened a new restaurant in the town of San Bernardino, California. They sold hamburgers, fries and milkshakes. Their restaurant was different from other restaurants then. It was fast and it was cheap. Usually, people sat in restaurants and waited a long time. In the McDonald’s brothers’ restaurant, you got your burger in seconds. And they cost only 15 cents. There was one more thing too: they were delicious2. Soon, people from all over San Bernardino came to the restaurant and it was always full and busy. One day in 1954 a man came into the restaurant. His name was Ray Kroc. He was a salesman3 for a milkshake machine company. He wanted to sell a milkshake machine to Dick and Mac. But when he saw the restaurant and all the customers there, he was amazed4. Ray Kroc was a great businessman. He saw the McDonald brothers’ idea – fast food. Mr Kroc left his job with the milkshake company and worked at the restaurant. He worked there for six years. Then, in 1961, he bought the restaurant from Dick and Mac and he started opening new restaurants, first in California, then everywhere in the USA ... and then around the world. Mr Kroc died in 1984, but he then had more than 6,000 restaurants in 27 different countries.
